Neurofunk vs. techstep
Neurofunk grew from techstep, but generally pushes the bass design, arrangement detail and futuristic sound palette further.
Techstep is the darker, stripped-back late-1990s drum & bass style from which neurofunk developed; neurofunk usually adds more elaborate bass movement and production detail. Both styles favour tension, hard drums and a sci-fi edge, so the boundary is a continuum rather than a hard rule.
What does techstep sound like?
Techstep tends to be sparse and percussive, with clipped breakbeats, ominous atmospheres and industrial bass pressure. Its impact often comes from restraint: the space between sounds is part of the groove.
What does neurofunk add?
Neurofunk keeps techstep's dark framework but makes the bass line a more active, evolving instrument. Modern productions commonly use shifting midrange tones, detailed edits and tightly engineered drum patterns.
